Goodwood Volleyball Association’s foundations lay in the tireless commitment and enthusiasm of locals Trevor and Dinny Sheffield.

In 1953, a young Trevor Sheffield joined the Goodwood Youth Movement (GYM) who offered gymnastics to locals out of a small hall on Rosa Street, adjacent the existing facility. Married to Dinny in 1967, the couple maintained their involvement in the gym.

From 1972-75, the gym hall roof was extended higher, with financial assistance from the local Lions Club, and volleyball was introduced, becoming so popular that games were offered five nights per week.

Unley Council replaced the old gym hall in the 1990s with the current facility containing a hall specifically set up to continue offering volleyball. The volleyball competition, ably managed by Dinny, adopted the name Goodwood Volleyball Association and was affiliated with Volleyball SA, and it became highly sort after by players of all abilities, from elite former Australian representatives down to local teams looking to play.

After years of loyal service and able management, Dinny Sheffield retired from managing Goodwood Volleyball Association in 2015, and the mantle of her role has been taken up by Kaye Hutchinson.

Sadly, Trevor Sheffield passed away in 2024.

In recognition of Dinny and Trevor’s service to the Goodwood community and to Goodwood volleyball, a trophy named the Sheffield Award is presented at the end of each season to the MVP of the grand finals. It is a small tribute to the phenomenal efforts and vision of two of Goodwood’s wonderful people.
